Grid-enabling Weka

Target users: Software developers and data miners
Leading partner: FhG-IAIS

The training was prepared for the development of Grid services related to knowledge discovery. Weka was used as a case study to show how Grid-enabled data mining applications can be created within a SIMDAT Grid infrastructure.

Three tutorial dates were offered at Sankt Augustin but had to be cancelled due to insufficient demand.

However, Fraunhofer IAIS conducted another training event involving SIMDAT:

Tutorial on distributed data analysis using R

This training activity was held in the context of the main R user conference useR! 2008. Topics like an introduction and details on distributed computing and systems in general, with focus on cluster and Grid computing, as well as a detailed overview and description of R packages dealing with distributed environments, especially the GridR package, were covered in the tutorial. In addition, several EU projects, including SIMDAT, which influenced and took part in the development of GridR and in which R in the context of Grid computing is used, have been presented.

The goal of the tutorial was to teach the audience in concepts and ideas of distributed systems and in detail the technical details and use of the GridR package as outcome of the EU projects. A huge interest in the tutorial could be noticed and a lot of feedback was received.
