The SIMDAT Meteo Demonstrator has been installed at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (METNO) for the International Polar Year (IPY). METNO provides IPY-users with ECMWF data, e. g. real-time forecast during the Andøya field campaign. Global operational analyses from ECMWF are used as boundary conditions for high-resolution modelling experiments of polar lows and Arctic mesoscale extreme weather. At MetNo a SIMDAT Node, Data Repository and Portal have been installed.  SIMDAT has been used to provide IPY-scientists with access to e.g. ECMWF and WMO data. The ECMWF trust METNO users through the Security Trust Domain model. Data is used for modelling (boundary conditions), planning of field activities (e.g. helicopter use). Hence, The SIMDAT software is an infrastructure to achieve the objectives of IPYs Data Policy of free data and interdisciplinary use. Feedback by Norwegian Meteorological Institute: 'The stability of the system and the performance of the search facilities is very good, the nodes run for weeks without leaking memory or dropping in performance. The portal is user-friendly and users can find the relevant data very easily. The search feature and the organisation of the metadata in a directory complement each other very well. But most of all, the main feature of the VMC software is the ease with which one can describe existing data to be published, and provide access to the data to a wide range of user with very little development effort –  a few hours at most.' ...read Deliverable 15.4.6 Evaluation report on Virtual Global Information System Centre by end-user
